About Our Lodge and Freemasonry

Located at 507 West Chesapeake Avenue in Towson, Maryland, Mount Moriah Lodge No. 116 has proudly served the community for over a century and a half. Founded during a pivotal time in American history, the lodge was granted Dispensation by the Grand Master of Masons in Maryland on February 6, 1865. It was formally instituted the following day and received its Charter from the Grand Lodge of Maryland on May 8, 1865. The lodge was named after Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, the historic site of King Solomon’s Temple.
Stated Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM, and visitors are always welcome.
Throughout its history, Mount Moriah Lodge has met in several locations within Towson, but has had two permanent Masonic homes. The original lodge building, located at the corner of Chesapeake and Washington Avenues, was dedicated on June 9, 1880. As Towson continued to grow, plans began in 1962 for a new facility, culminating in the dedication of the present building at 507 West Chesapeake Avenue on October 7, 1972.
Members of Mount Moriah Lodge have long been active in the leadership of Freemasonry in Maryland. Among the most distinguished are Warren S. Seipp and Edgar Cordell Powers.
Warren S. Seipp, a Past Master of Mount Moriah Lodge, served as Worshipful Master from 1904 to 1907 and later as Grand Master of Masons in Maryland from 1920 until his death in 1930. He remains the only member of the lodge to have served four consecutive years as Worshipful Master. One of his lasting contributions to Maryland Masonry was the establishment of the Bonnie Blink Retirement Home in Cockeysville, created to provide care for elderly Masons and their spouses. He is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Towson.
Edgar Cordell Powers, also a Past Master of Mount Moriah Lodge and Worshipful Master in 1938, went on to serve as Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, for the Orient of Maryland.
